Dancing Through Generations

Posted by Brittany Irwin on Jun 23, 2014 1:32:00 PM

Dance The World is bringing together three generations of dancers from the Academy of Music and Dance in Wallingford, CT as  this article from The Day showcases.

Courtney Billings, the school’s director, is the third generation of the family-owned academy. “My mother used to run the Academy, and many of my students’ parents and grandparents remember taking lessons with her,” said Billings.

This year, Billings has decided to award a dance scholarship in memory of her grandmother, Mimi. Mimi, more formally known as Marion Fucci, supported her daughter, who opened the studio at the young age of 17, by sewing dance costumes and playing the piano at the studio. The scholarship will go to two children whose father is battling a brain tumor.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing for these grandparents to join their grandkids in Disney World and watch them perform on the greatest stage in the country. It’s amazing for them to be able to share this moment,” she said.

WCV is all about giving world-class experiences to students through travel and exposure to their field of interest. In March, the Camp Hill High School Marching Band not only traveled with WCV to Disney World in Orlando; but also had the opportunity to perform in the Main Street Electrical Parade at the Magic Kingdom. The participation experience didn’t end there as their trip also involved learning workshops with professional Disney musicians. The trip may have been for a weekend but the memories and lessons will last a lifetime.

Check out the Marching Band’s news article and video of the band performing “Whistle While You Work” during the parade.
